My friend Penelope recently had a baby and it reminded me of the Finnish tradition when it comes to naming babies.
When a baby is born in a Finnish hospital, the newborn is referred to either baby girl or baby boy. All documentation basically proves the mother had a baby, but no name is given to the child. There isn't even a space for it on the papers.
Generally in Finland, a name isn't given to a child until he/she is christened. This could be months later. Finns like to get to know the personality of the baby first, and then spend a few weeks deciding which name is the most appropriate.
So for now, I am congratulating Penelope on the birth of her adorable little son "Baby Boy Donner", and look forward to hearing what his name will finally be.
